    Our campout has been scheduled!

We are going to Potato Creek on July 22-24!

The bulk of the Scout’s effort in earning the Outdoor Adventure will be focused on the planning. The boys W2 den will be doing all the planning, but we will open this campout to all of the Webelos Scouts of Pack 10.

Watch for an RSVP link soon. It will come from Evite (please accurately indicate the number of people attending, we will buy food based on the number of people who RSVP). Also, the fee for participation is only going to be $20 per family!

In preparation, please join us for the planning meetings via Zoom.

These meetings are on June 28, 6-7pm and July 5, 6-7pm. Even if your Scout cannot attend the campout, please try to create time so they can join the zoom. They will be able to earn the Outdoor Adventure even if they only attend these Zoom calls (although there may be a couple of things that get shifted to families to complete in that scenario).

Zoom information is available below and will be posted on the Google Pack 10 calendar. Please join us!

    Welcome to WEBELOS 2!

WEBELOS 2, or the Arrow of Light year, allows Scouts to earn the only rank advancement emblem that can be carried forward to the Scouts BSA uniform. This year includes elements specifically designed to prepare the Cubs to join a Scout troop, and allows us a bit more freedom to make this happen. To that end, we are going to start work on the AoL Outdoor Adventure this summer. THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!!!

Our plan will be to hold two zoom meetings in the early summer. During these meetings, we’ll plan an overnight campout for sometime in the July, before school starts. One of the first things we’ll do is to figure out the date for that overnight so everyone can plan. Please note that ours is a family pack: a parent or guardian must camp with the scout. Look for an email survey soon that gives some date options - remember to select both the preferential weekend and those that are less than ideal, but that you can make work.

There are three other requirements we ask that you start on now… they’re simple, but repetition will be key.

    1. Tie a bowline knot. Here’s how: https://www.animatedknots.com/bowline-knot

    2. Learn the outdoor code (with the goal of reciting from memory on the campout):
As an American, I will do my best to-
Be clean in my outdoor manners.
    Be careful with fire.
    Be considerate in the outdoors.
    Be conservation-minded.

    3. Learn the Leave no Trace principles (with the goal of reciting from memory on the campout), and be ready to discuss what each practically means:
    Plan ahead.
    Stick to trails.
    Manage your pet.
    Leave what you find.
    Respect other visitors,
    Trash your trash.
A discussion guide is attached. Note that this is a slightly different than the version you’ll find if you turn to Google… this list has been modified by the BSA to build a foundation for Cub-age Scouts.

The bulk of the work for earning this adventure pin is in the preparation. Adults of scouts in the den will work together to plan other activities at the campout so that we can work on requirements early.

There will be a fee of $33 per family for this two-night activity. That fee will cover all costs associated with this activity except for the park entrance fee (which is paid per vehicle). The pack’s treasury will underwrite the event, and the fee we all pay is only to partially offset the financial impact to the larger group’s funds.

If you’re looking in your basement and you realize that you might not have all that you need to camp, there are several sources available for getting good equipment. One suggestion for now is rei.com - they’re in the middle of their semi-annual sale, and coupons are available on the web if you search. Also, be sure to check out reioutlet.com for discontinued, but new items. They also have a used/reconditioned section to their website. If you call REI, they also offer those affiliated with Scouting organizations a 12% discount, although the current sales may be more advantageous. Other resources are backcountry.com and www.alpsbrands.com/hikerdirect (you’ll register as a parent - this website offers great gear from Alps Mountaineering at decent discounts).

One last thing… your Scout will need a new BSA medical form to participate in the campout. Note that you only need to participate Part A & B. Since our campout will be less than 72 hours, Part C is not required. The form is attached to this email.

Arrow of Light Scouts kick it up a notch! Look for more information soon!

    Thanks!
